The jury for the feature film category at the 58th National Film Awards has recommended that movie that wins the top award should be India's official entry at the Oscars every year.
"When the full jury of feature film in National Film Awards headed by J.P. Dutta presented their report to the honourable minister this year (Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting Ambika Soni), they told the minister that Malayalam feature film 'Adaminte Makan Abu', which has won the best feature film award, should be India's official entry to the Oscar this year," Bhupendra Kainthola, director (Indian Panorama & National Film Awards).
"They also recommended that every year the best feature film, whichever film wins, should be India's entry to the Oscars," he added. The winners of national awards are unanimously chosen by a team of people who come from various parts of the country.
"The national awards are Indian in character because a Malayalam or a Tamil film can win an award. Moreover, jury is pan India. The jury has members from Karnataka, West Bengal, Bollywood and Tamil Nadu. So when a pan Indian jury is selecting a film, 10 different people from different parts of the country judge one film as the best feature film. So the jury felt that the winning film should be India's official entry to the Oscars year after year," said Kainthola
