They say doing a movie based on historical theme is no easy task in Tamil cinema. Many a producers shy away from doing such themes fearing that it is costly affair and demand More strain. Gone are those days when historical themes were made in large numbers.

However the success of much-recent flicks like Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi and Pazhassi Raja has given courage to many in Tamil cinema. Films like Ponnar Shankar (based on epic novel by M Karunanidhi), Ponniyin Selvan ( inspired by a historical novel by eminent writer Kalki) and Rajnikanth starrer Raana (which narrates about an important event that happened in 17th century) are being made in Tamil cinema. Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has announced that his next film is based on freedom fighters Dheeran Chinnamalai.

Why such theme? A producer on condition of anonymity, says, 'it is a safe bet. You need not go abroad for shooting. All can be done in the studios. Also there is a good story on hand before we commence shooting. Though the expense may be high, if marketed well, these movies will attract all attention'
