It is no easy task making a historical movie. Mani Ratnam knows this pretty well. Hence the master craftsman has sought advice from no lesser person than Kamal Haasan himself. Kamal Hassan, who was part of historical film like Hey Ram, did a intense research for his magnum opus Marutha Nayagam which couldn't take off due to reasons unspecified.

Since Mani Ratnam is doing a movie on immortal classic Ponniyin Selvan, penned by writer Kalki, he reportedly sought Kamal Hassan's advice.

Having decided on the cast, Mani ratnam reportedly found out locations in Mysore to shoot the film. Director Vasanth will be Mani’s main associate in this project which is commencing in October 2011.

Meanwhile, Kamal Hassan had adviced Mani Ratnam to import the horses from France, which was what Kamal did for his Marutha Nayagam. It is learnt that Kamal has even recommended that Mani contact certain places and people in France to get the kind of horses he is looking for.

The actor also gave Mani the names of two of his best men who worked on the script of Maruthanayagam, to assist Mani with his project
